This special winter safari is for adventurous travelers who prefer to take on the challenges and rewards of a 4x4 safari in winter. In winter the land comes into a realm of its own: outstanding scenery, challenging conditions, warm hospitality and virtually no traffic! With a reliable 4x4 vehicle, pre-booked accommodations and a detailed travel kit you are set to explore. Click here to view a map of the driving route.

Activities can include a flight to Mt. McKinley , swimming in outdoor hot springs, skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing, crossing the Arctic Circle and viewing the amazing aurora borealis. Most of the main highways are open and winter driving conditions are reasonably good.


Nine days/ Eight Nights

Day 1 - Arrive in Anchorage
Pick up your 4X4 vehicle on arrival.  Overnight in downtown Anchorage.

Day 2 - Anchorage to Talkeetna / 112 miles / 2 hours driving time
This morning start your driving adventure to Talkeetna.  Talkeetna is the main departure point for Mt. McKinley expeditions. Optional flightseeing is available this afternoon.  Overnight in Talkeetna
, featuring Susitna River Lodge.

Day 3 - Talkeetna to Healy / 155 miles / 3 hours driving time
Today you'll drive by Denali National Park.  The park is closed to traffic but is staffed by rangers in the winter.  You can drive about 5 miles into the park and visit the ranger station.  Overnight in Healy.

Day 4 - Healy to Chena Hot Springs Resort / 170 miles / 3 hours driving time
Your journey continues northward today to Fairbanks.  You will be visiting Chena Hot Springs Resort, the best location for viewing the Northern Lights.  Overnight at Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Day 5 - Chena Hot Spring Resort
Day free to explore the area.  Spend your time soaking in the springs or partaking in a number of optional activities offered at the resort.  Overnight in Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Day 6 - Chena Hot Spring Resort to Fairbanks / 60 miles / 1 hour driving time
Today return to Fairbanks.  You have time to explore the Chena River State Recreation Area on the way back into town.  Overnight in Fairbanks.

Day 7 - Fairbanks to Glennallen / 249 miles / 6 hours driving time
The Richardson Highway is regarded as Alaska's most scenic winter wilderness route.   With outstanding mountain vistas, this is an epic drive through Alaska's heartland.  Overnight in the Glennallen.

Day 8 - Glennallen to Anchorage / 189 miles / 3 hours of driving
Continue along the Richardson highway until you reach the Glen highway.  The majestic Chugach Mountains and the Matanuska Glacier make a grand finale to today's journey.  Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 9 - Departure
Return the 4X4 to the rental station today.  End of tour services.

4X4 vehicle with unlimited mileage; 8 nights accommodations in moderate properties;  detailed driving itinerary with information kit; prepaid vouchers; and all taxes.
