Tour 101

Bears are one of the most popular attractions in Alaska today. Animal lovers come from all over the world to view these magnificent animals. What better way to observe bears and their cubs during the long summer days than watching them roam the coastline searching for choice salmon? The thrill of seeing these giant animals in their natural habitat remains one of the most rewarding experiences of an Alaskan visit.

The coastal waters of Southwest Alaska and Kodiak Island present some of the best bear viewing opportunities in the world. This tour includes a round trip flight from Anchorage to Kodiak and from there you fly by seaplane to view the bears along the shoreline of the Alaska Peninsula. If conditions allow, your pilot lands near the bears for close up viewing during the half-day air excursion. There is ample time allocated for exploring Kodiak further on your own and the tour may easily be extended.

Two days/one night

Day 1:  This morning your flight departs from Anchorage airport. Depending on local weather conditions the bear viewing flight usually departs in the afternoon and our local representatives will coordinate the arrangements with you (including a complimentary ground transfer from your hotel to the floatplane). The sea plane flight safari provides dramatic views of Kodiak Island's rugged landscape as you search for the great Alaskan brown bears. If the bear sightings are better on the Alaska Peninsula, the pilot will cross the Shelikof Straight and fly along the shoreline; landing for the best viewing and photo opportunities. After returning to the city of Kodiak, ground transfer provided back to the hotel. Overnight at Buskin River Inn or similar.

Day 2:  This morning our local guide will meet you at the hotel for a tour of the Kodiak area, or tour the area on your own by rental car. With its' Russian heritage, the city of Kodiak offers visitors fascinating insight into Alaska's history and cultural make-up. Following the sightseeing tour you will return to Anchorage late this afternoon. Tour concludes on arrival in Anchorage.

Round trip flight from Anchorage to Kodiak. Overnight accommodation in a Kodiak hotel (one night). Transfers in Kodiak as indicated, half day guided sightseeing tour, and the guided ½ day bear viewing flight with landing (if possible) for viewing bears.

*This tour requires a two person minimum for the bear viewing flight safari!  Bear-viewing flights may be rescheduled due to local weather conditions. Flights may continue to the Alaska Peninsula (Katmai Coast) subject to current bear sightings. Kodiak has a maritime climate (the bears thrive in it). We suggest you bring good raingear. Tour departs daily.

Extending your visit in Kodiak:  The second largest island in America, Kodiak is an interesting destination which may require more time to explore. Our reservation team will be pleased to arrange additional Kodiak tours. Consider sport fishing charters for salmon and halibut, flying aboard the US Mail Plane to a remote village, visiting an Archeological dig site, booking a nature lodge or exploring on your own with a rental car. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate guided sea kayaking trips or horseback riding.
